Avoiding Scams in Hanoi: A Cautionary Guide for Travelers Exploring the City

Experiencing local life [topic] New Year [topic] # So, the thing is, after arriving in Hanoi yesterday, we found ourselves meandering through the bustling streets, still getting our bearings. Today, as we approached Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, a particularly kind and enthusiastic rickshaw driver caught our attention.

His friendly demeanor was inviting, so we decided to give it a shot. To our surprise, he simply handed us a map and asked where we wanted to go. I spotted a serene temple nestled in the heart of West Lake and thought it would be a perfect destination, so I suggested we head there. He quoted 200k VND (about 60 RMB) for the ride, mentioning that it was a bit far and thus a bit more expensive.

Seeing that he appeared to be an elderly man, we agreed without haggling.

However, shortly after we set off, something felt amiss. After just a quick turn, we were already at the edge of West Lake, and the entire journey lasted no more than 3 to 5 minutes. As we got off, he insisted on 300k VND, shouting it repeatedly. It dawned on us that we were being scammed. Unfortunately, we only had 500k VND on us, and sure enough, he short-changed us by 100k VND.

The whole experience left a sour taste. Not only was the distance incredibly short for such a high price, but the last-minute price hike and lack of change made it feel like outright robbery.

So, I want to remind everyone visiting Hanoi: if you’re considering a rickshaw ride, make sure to have small change ready!!! Prepare small change in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises!!!
