[Cherry Blossom R] has always believed that no journey is truly dull; the sensation of “boredom” merely reflects a lack of understanding—of biology, geology, and human history. Without these lenses, one cannot perceive the world as a naturalist does (which is why I’ve spent years enriching my knowledge in these areas).

⚓️ I’ve just completed a solo trek through Santa Cruz, yet I couldn’t help but feel that meeting more people and engaging with locals would have added depth to the experience. Stunning snow-capped peaks and vast azure lakes can still feel monotonous without anchoring them to the cultural narratives that give them meaning. This is the allure—and trap—of humanism, a perspective I find myself unable to escape.

(There were few travelers along the way. The highlight was when Pedro, the cattle herder, recognized me, asking if I’d just hiked the W trail—and he even remembered my companions [doge].)

[Fire R] So far, my most unforgettable experience in Peru has been riding in “minivans”: vehicles that pick up passengers at any point and drop them off wherever they please, operating without fixed schedules or stops. Just stand by the roadside, and you’ll be whisked away. The local passengers are endlessly fascinating—farmers, students, transport workers.

.. These 🚍 minivans are the true heart and soul of Peru [sly smile R], revitalizing me and reconnecting me to the world. Over these 20+ days in Peru, this immersion has sparked new plans and aspirations…

[Beer R] The next phase of my journey will transition from a paradise of nature to a cradle of culture, with companions joining along the way [party R].

⛰️ A few notes about the Santa Cruz trek:
– It’s arguably the most renowned multi-day hike for beginners in Peru, lasting 3-4 days.
– The total distance ranges from 43km to 56km, depending on which optional routes you choose.
– My route details can be found on the Strava app under Heidi Zhang.
– There’s only one pass over 4800 meters: Punta Unión.

– The western starting point is Cashapampa, while the eastern starting point is Vaquería. Since the eastern route sees less traffic and is harder to access, it’s recommended to trek from east to west; otherwise, finding transportation after completing the trek may prove challenging.
– A highly recommended side trip: the breathtaking blue lake valley at Almapayo base camp (otherwise, this route could feel a bit “mundane”).

– To reach the starting point at Vaquería: If you’d prefer convenience, book a taxi through a travel agency. For the adventurous route, take a collectivo to Yungay from the northern riverbank of Huaraz city early in the morning at 5 AM. Once you disembark, there will be numerous vehicles available to take you to Vaquería.

Personally, I met a local heading the same way at a Pisco mountain lodge and hitched a ride.
