Lake Titicaca, the world’s largest high-altitude freshwater lake, sits majestically at an average elevation of about 3,810 meters. Most of this breathtaking body of water is located in Peru, with a smaller portion in Bolivia. To explore Lake Titicaca in 🇵🇪 Peru, you typically sign up for a day tour after arriving in Puno. There are two popular options for these tours:
– Uros + Amantani: 50 soles
– Uros + Taquile: 70 soles
The price includes transportation from your hotel to the dock, round-trip boat fare, a knowledgeable guide, and a delicious lunch. This is the most budget-friendly option I found, after inquiring at a travel agency on the bustling pedestrian street in the city center.
I opted for the Uros + Amantani tour, which I would rate 3 out of 5 stars. The majority of the time was spent on the boat, with a scenic one-hour journey from the dock to Uros. Upon arrival, we were treated to a 20-minute explanation of the local culture and history. We then split into small groups to enter their unique reed houses for a 15-minute sharing session and a brief sales pitch. Following that, we had the opportunity to take a 15-minute ride on their traditional reed boats nearby. The boat ride costs an additional 15 soles per person, and those who choose not to partake can wander around freely (see pictures 7-9).
After leaving Uros, it takes about 1.5 hours by boat to reach Amantani, where you have two hiking routes to choose from: a leisurely 10-minute walk along the lakeshore to the dock, or a more challenging 40-50 minute hike uphill to the dock.
Post-hike, it’s a half-hour boat ride to Llanchon for a well-deserved lunch, usually served around 2 PM. The restaurant boasts a prime location with stunning views. The meal consists of a hearty soup, a main course, and tea, all of which were quite delicious.
After a relaxing 30-minute break, we made our way back to Puno, arriving in the city around 5 PM.
⚠️Tips
– Be sure to have a good breakfast in the morning and bring some snacks and water for the boat trip, as you’ll be hungry by noon.
– Most hotels’ front desks offer day tours, and if you’re looking for a discount, check out the travel agencies in the busy downtown area.
– For getting around in Puno, consider taking local tuk-tuks, which generally cost between 2-4 soles.
