The ancient Inca capital, Cusco, is a treasure trove of history and culture that even ten days couldn’t fully capture! 🤔 Shout out to everyone! ❗️ Not making a plan turned out to be the most cost-effective strategy. 😏
Before our trip, we scoured the internet for tours, thinking we would meticulously plan and book everything in advance. However, when another friend joined us, coordinating our schedules became a challenge. So, by the time we arrived in Cusco, we hadn’t made any concrete plans.
Trying to be clever backfired, but it led to an unexpected discovery: there’s no real need to book tours ahead of time. Travel agencies are abundant on the streets of Cusco, and tours that cost dozens of dollars online can be found for just a fraction of the price in soles. What a bargain! 🤫
For instance, Rainbow Mountain 🌈, which we saw listed at $80 online, was available for around 80 soles (not including the entrance ticket, which brings the total to about 110 soles). Amazon Rainforest 🌳 tours, typically priced at $400-500, were within our budget for a 5-day, 4-night adventure, including tips, for less than $400.
Moreover, the flexibility of on-site booking is a huge plus. Cusco sits at over 3,000 meters above sea level, and many visitors experience altitude sickness upon arrival, requiring a few days to acclimate. Most tours here start as early as 4-5 am, and jumping into such a demanding schedule right away might not be the best idea.
⚠️ Of course, this doesn’t apply to Machu Picchu. For that iconic site, you still need to book in advance. We learned this the hard way and missed out. We’re planning to go again in January, and I’ll share that guide with you all then!
