If asked which city in Peru is the most beautiful, many who have visited might name Arequipa. This hidden gem is less frequented by foreign tourists; it lacks the modern grandeur of Lima and the historical allure of Cusco. Instead, it quietly radiates its own unique charm.
A friend once recommended that I spend a weekend in this enchanting city, and since then, it has remained etched in my memory, beckoning me for a return visit.
Nestled among volcanoes, Arequipa offers breathtaking views on clear days, making the dry season the ideal time to explore. Known as the White City, it is almost entirely constructed from white volcanic stone, a distinctive building material that gives the city a luminous and ethereal quality, especially under the bright sun.
Though I haven’t yet experienced the beauty of the dry season, I can only imagine how extraordinary it must be. My visit in March, during the rainy season, was still unforgettable. Despite the overcast skies and drizzle, the wet walls and gentle raindrops created a dreamy, timeless atmosphere. The street corner band performance, with its hauntingly beautiful melodies, added a lyrical rhythm to the city, blending a neat yet vibrant beauty.
Beyond its stunning architecture, the charm of Arequipa lies in the leisurely and relaxed lifestyle of its residents, and their simple, warm, and enthusiastic approach to life. The steam rising from local dishes paints a vivid and heartwarming picture of daily life.
Here are a few tips for your visit:
– Plan your trip according to the seasons; the dry season is generally more favorable.
– Don’t miss the Santa Catalina Monastery, where the Peruvian art of color coordination reaches its zenith.
– Savor the local specialty stews at a Picantería, a traditional eatery that offers a true taste of the region.
– When visiting the main cathedral, remember that shorts are not permitted, so dress accordingly.
– For the best photography, head to the rooftop of the Arequipa Suites Plaza Hotel, which offers a fantastic view of the Plaza de Armas.
