Peru, the cradle of the mighty Amazon River, nurtures the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Soaring over the majestic Andes, from the icy poles to the lush equator, we finally arrived at the Amazon rainforest, as seen in documentaries, ready to embark on an unforgettable three-day, two-night adventure.
Day 1: Lima ✈️ Puerto Maldonado
As we touched down, a wave of humid heat and muggy air enveloped us. We hopped on a bus to the port, then boarded a boat that glided into the heart of the Amazon rainforest, sailing along the Madre de Dios River. As we ventured deeper into the rainforest, our mobile phone signals faded away. During the journey, we marveled at the sight of numerous unnamed birds, crocodiles, lizards, spiders, turtles, and playful monkeys. Finally, we settled into our cozy forest cabin, surrounded by the sounds of nature.
Day 2: Before the first light of dawn, we set out for a mysterious water area, eager to encounter a large family of otters, most active at this early hour. The little otters were incredibly adorable. Lake Sandoval, rich in wildlife, is home to over 40 species of resident birds. Most waterfowl are busy fishing in the early morning, making it the perfect time to venture out in a small wooden boat to observe and photograph them. After a hearty breakfast back at the cabin, we embarked on a genuine Amazon rainforest hike, searching for and observing the diverse flora and fauna. It’s crucial to remember not to touch any living creatures in the rainforest, as many plants and animals here may be toxic, and we generally cannot identify them.
👩🦯➡️ The rainforest hike lasts about 1.5 hours (insect repellent is a must, as countless mosquitoes buzz around you, requiring frequent sprays). We then returned to the cabin to rest. The rainforest becomes too stifling and hot during the day, making it unsuitable to go out, so we mostly stayed in the cabin, only venturing out again in the evening by small boat. Since we visited during the rainy season, we were treated to a heavy downpour in the tropical rainforest one evening. Although we got soaked, the appearance of a double rainbow in the sky made us feel incredibly lucky 🌈🌈. After dinner, we continued with a night hike, discovering the rainforest’s nocturnal wonders.
🏠 Every night after 9 PM, the cabin loses power. The white noise of the rainforest is truly soothing, and every night we fell asleep to the symphony of insects and birds. Although we were disconnected from modern civilization for three days, witnessing the incredible diversity of nature and bringing the world seen in textbooks and documentaries to life was an indescribable experience, truly a once-in-a-lifetime one ❤️. Being in this vast rainforest, surrounded by so much vibrant life, felt like a soul-cleansing journey, which in itself is profoundly meaningful, isn’t it?
