1. Attractions and Cities
Machu Picchu, the crown jewel of Peru, often fails to meet the lofty expectations set by its fame. The site, while breathtaking, is relatively compact and relies heavily on its dramatic natural setting for impact. With limited artifacts on display, visitors might find the visual experience somewhat underwhelming. Additionally, the journey to Machu Picchu can be cumbersome, with transportation and ticketing processes that are less than user-friendly. Yet, a visit to Peru without seeing Machu Picchu would feel incomplete. Other destinations, such as Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, offer optional but equally enchanting experiences.

Cusco, a charming Spanish-style town, carries fewer traces of Inca civilization than one might expect. Its well-preserved and uniform old town provides a serene and picturesque environment, perfect for a few days of relaxation. The city exceeded my expectations, though it’s worth noting that the high altitude can lead to mild altitude sickness, so acclimatization is key.

The Nazca Lines, an enigmatic ancient relic, have sparked theories of extraterrestrial origins. Coupled with the desert oasis of Huacachina, this route offers a fascinating and highly recommended travel experience.

Lima, a quintessential South American metropolis, boasts a Spanish-style historic center and starkly contrasting neighborhoods that reflect the city’s extreme wealth disparity. One of its unique features is the striking cliff formations along the coastline, adding a dramatic touch to the urban landscape.

As someone who isn’t particularly interested in wildlife, I skipped the Amazon and the Ballestas Islands, and thus cannot provide a firsthand account of these natural wonders.

2. Accommodation and Transportation
Accommodations in Peru offer excellent value for money, surpassing what you’d typically find in the US and Canada, though still a bit behind China. It’s well worth investing a little extra to secure a more comfortable and enjoyable stay at a higher-end hotel.

Transportation in Peru primarily consists of buses and planes. Due to the country’s infrastructure, travel times can be longer than expected, even for short distances. However, most buses are clean and comfortable, making the journey a pleasant part of the experience.

3. Food
Before my trip, I read numerous online reviews praising the diversity and quality of Peruvian cuisine, with many top-ranked restaurants and a plethora of Chinese eateries. My expectations were high, but unfortunately, the reality fell short. Whether dining at budget, mid-range, or high-end establishments, the food was consistently either overly salty or sour, with strong flavors that didn’t quite hit the mark. If you’re craving Chinese cuisine, it’s best to avoid the chifa restaurants; apart from fried rice, their offerings are often inferior to even fast-food chains like Panda Express. In Lima, however, there are several authentic Chinese restaurants that offer a more satisfying culinary experience.
