✨Personally, I think the most worthwhile place to visit and experience in the North Island of New Zealand during autumn is definitely hiking in Tongariro National Park in the North Island of New Zealand~ The Tongariro National Park, which is anchored by three volcanoes, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu, really can only be appreciated after you’ve been there. It’s truly different from other national parks like Mount Cook and Mount Aspiring.😌

🤣Although I’ve only been there once, that one hike allowed me to see the stunning scenery of volcanic craters, glacial valleys, emerald lakes, and rock formations, it was amazing! 💘👉🏻I plan to go again in April, either to explore a new route or join a guided tour.

Last year when I visited Tongariro, under the persuasion of a local friend, I wavered between a leisurely and a challenging route, and ultimately 😆 chose the leisurely route!!

📍Tongariro National Park

🔵Tongariro Hiking Routes (Yes, this is the first one I chose)

1⃣️Tongariro Alpine Crossing (TAC): 9 hours, can be completed in one day with light gear—friendly for beginners
✅General route: Mangatepopo Valley—South Crater—Blue Lake—Ketetahi
👉Famous scenic spots: Emerald Lakes, geysers, boiling mud pools, fumaroles, hot springs, etc…
2⃣️Tongariro Northern Circuit: 3-4 days, requires overnight camping with heavy gear—suitable for experienced hikers
👉Famous scenic spots: Emerald Lakes, volcanic craters, summit (roughly, but over so many days, you’ll definitely see sunrises and sunsets, making the scenery even more diverse).
🔵Tongariro Hiking Gear
1⃣️Sun protection—sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, sun-protective clothing, women should also wear a sun-protective mask
2⃣️Clothing—hiking shoes, breathable quick-dry outdoor clothing, quick-dry socks, waterproof jacket, anti-friction gloves
3⃣️Other—lightweight backpack, insect repellent, lightweight and filling food
✨TIPS: In fact, hiking shoes and outerwear for cold protection can be rented, so you don’t need to bring your own. Also, make sure to rest well the day before, otherwise, you might feel completely drained.
👌This is a brief overview. If you want to know more about 👉🏻 detailed hiking routes and information on various transportation and facilities, 🌝🌝 feel free to ask me, and I’ll write a more detailed post!!
I totally agree that Tongariro National Park is a must-visit spot, especially for its unique volcanic landscapes. Have you tried any of the day hikes? They’re incredible!
I totally agree about Tongariro National Park being a must-visit spot, especially for those vivid autumn colors. Have you tried any other trails in the park besides the famous Alpine Crossing? I’m curious about some of the lesser-known paths!
