Today, I had the incredible experience of seeing more sea lions 🦭 than I ever thought possible at Katiki Point.

As we left Dunedin and headed towards Oamaru, we made a stop at the Katiki Point Lighthouse, a free peninsula that serves as a haven for observing wild sea lions. This location is renowned for having the largest population of sea lions on the South Island.

Upon arrival, park your car in the free parking lot 🆓🅿️, and follow the well-marked signs to the trail. The path is straightforward and leads you to a small island where the sea lions gather, taking about 15 minutes to reach.

🦭 The sight of these majestic creatures lounging lazily on the rocks is simply enchanting. We even witnessed a playful fight between three sea lions, while others just gazed at us with their adorable, curious eyes. It was an unforgettable moment.

– Always maintain a safe distance from the sea lions.
– Keep your voice down to avoid disturbing them.
– Never feed or tease the sea lions.

🍽️ After our delightful encounter with the sea lions, we drove just 8 minutes to a highly acclaimed local eatery, The Fishwife 🦞 (Photos 11, 12). The lobster here is truly a culinary delight, freshly caught every morning. No wonder it’s so tender and delicious! Many people come for its reputation, and I wholeheartedly recommend it 👍.

❓ A common question from my little girl: “Mom, is this a sea lion, sea lion, or seal?” I admit, I’ve been confused too. Here’s a simple way to tell them apart:
1. **Sea Lions** have visible ear flaps and can bend their flippers at a 90-degree angle, making them more agile on land. You might even spot them climbing rocks!
2. **Seals** have ear holes instead of flaps, and their flippers are shorter, which means they spend more time in the water.
