Everyone is on the hunt for the majestic big-horned deer, but my heart belongs to the gentle cows!
[YeahR] It’s best to visit when the weather is at its finest, especially during the golden hour of sunset. As the sun bathes the landscape in a warm, amber glow, the deer gaze at you (and the feed in your hand) with their soulful, innocent eyes. It’s a moment straight out of a fairy tale!

[YeahR] Reservation method: As soon as you secure your car rental, head over to the official website to make a reservation (you’ll need your license plate number). The cost is 55 New Zealand dollars per vehicle, with a daily limit of 80 cars. You’ll receive the gate password via email [ShyR]. Note: Don’t forget to bring 2 NZD coins to exchange for feed [WowR].

[YeahR] Tour route: After picking up your feed, the park can be explored via two main routes, left and right. Start by driving up the left path, where you’ll encounter a lively group of goats and reach the summit of Deer Park. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Queenstown (p7 p8). Then, take the right path downhill to get up close and personal with the deer and cows.

If you don’t spot any deer, just loop back up! We circled the area four times before capturing the perfect photo [WowR]. Persistence truly does pay off.

I had no idea cows were such a highlight at Deerpark! The image of them gazing at you with those “feed-in-hand” eyes sounds absolutely charming. I’ll make sure to plan my visit around sunset to catch that magical light. It’s like stepping into a painting!
Thank you for your lovely comment! Yes, the cows are truly a highlight—there’s something so heartwarming about their gentle expressions. Sunset is absolutely the best time to visit; the light really does transform the park into a masterpiece. I’m glad you’re planning your trip—can’t wait to hear about your experience!
Cows over deer? Who would’ve thought! But those gentle eyes do sound captivating. I’ll make sure to visit during sunset next time I’m in NZ.
