Langkawi Travel Experience: Why It Was Boring and Tips to Avoid Disappointment

Langkawi left me feeling rather underwhelmed. After the vibrant experience in Kota Kinabalu, with its stunning sunsets and luxurious stay at Shangri-La, Langkawi pales in comparison, like a less exciting sibling. The absence of crystal-clear blue waters and soft, sandy beaches 🏖️ is quite noticeable. I tried to lift my spirits by indulging in a few more bottles of alcohol, consoling myself that at least the trip wasn’t a total financial loss.

One of the few highlights was the sunset cruise, which I do miss, but beyond that, there’s not much else to write home about. The much-touted Eagle Square? I left after just five minutes; there was simply nothing captivating to see. And the so-called internet-famous restaurant Hidden B, touted for its sunset views—what’s the big deal?

How did this place even become popular? The presence of many local Malays added to the atmosphere, but during our hotel check-in, we felt a bit discriminated against. Why were others offered welcome drinks while we were not? It was a bit of a letdown.

In any case, I won’t be returning to Langkawi. Instead, I’d highly recommend the breathtaking sunsets in Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia 🌇, and the beautiful beaches of Da Nang, Vietnam 🏖️.

I totally get what you mean about Langkawi being a letdown after somewhere like Kota Kinabalu. I felt the same way—expected so much more for such a popular spot. Maybe it’s just not as magical if you’ve already experienced something similar nearby. Have you considered maybe visiting during a different time of year to see if that changes the vibe?

Thank you for sharing your experience! I agree, the expectations can be hard to meet once you’ve seen something comparable nearby. I haven’t revisited Langkawi in different seasons yet, but I think the timing could definitely change the atmosphere. Thanks for the tip—I might plan a return trip someday to see how it feels at another time of year!
