How to Drive a Car to Langkawi: A Comprehensive Guide for Tourists

🚗 First, select the company you want to transport your car with. There are several options available, and I found their prices to be quite similar. I chose Langkawi Auto Express because their website is user-friendly and easy to navigate. 😊

🚗 You need to book at least one day in advance. If you have an iPhone, the website will automatically translate for you. The first page is for selecting your travel date, which must be done 24 hours ahead. After you click, it will show you the available time slots. From my experience, the cheaper option works just fine; I didn’t notice any significant difference between standard and flexible bookings.

🚗 Next, you’ll fill in some vehicle information. This page might look a bit daunting, but all the details can be found on your car card, so it’s just a matter of copying them over. If you’re missing any information, you can usually find it on a used car website. Make sure to double-check your phone number and license plate, as these are the most crucial pieces of information.

🚗 Then, you’ll move on to the payment section. Both VISA and TNG are accepted. Once you complete the payment, an E-Ticket will be sent to your email. If you use a QQ email, be aware that the ticket might end up in your spam folder, so check there if you don’t see it right away.

🚗 The next day, a staff member will contact you via WhatsApp. They will ask for your car card and IC, and they will confirm your boarding time. They suggested printing out the E-Ticket, but the staff at the site can help you print it if you haven’t already.

🚗 I purchased a round-trip ticket, which cost 372 RM. The departure from Perlis to Langkawi is at 2:30 pm, with a check-in time of 1 pm. The return trip from Langkawi to Perlis is at 12:30 pm, with a check-in time of 11 am. For both trips, you need to arrive one hour in advance. I was a bit anxious about the process, so I arrived early, but the staff hadn’t started working yet.

🚗 At 1 pm, the staff began their duties. I brought my road tax, insurance, car card, driver’s license, and passport, but none of them were necessary. They only asked for my booking number, license plate, and whether I was the driver. That was it. They directed me to go straight and turn left, and to board at 2 pm.

🚗 As I drove up, I saw a ship with a windmill logo preparing to dock. The staff reminded me again that boarding would start at 2 pm. So, I took the opportunity to grab a bowl of noodles at a nearby Thai restaurant. When I returned, it was exactly 2 pm. It’s best to be among the first or second in line, as this ensures you’re the first to board and the first to disembark. The ship changes direction after docking, and watching the sea from inside your car is a truly unique experience.

🚗 After parking, there’s an air-conditioned rest area on the second floor where you can buy coffee, instant noodles, and even watch movies. It’s very comfortable, especially when it’s not crowded. The journey takes about two and a half hours, and the staff will guide you to drive off once you arrive. The service throughout the trip is exceptionally good, making the entire experience smooth and enjoyable.

The cost is comparable to renting a car in Langkawi, but it provides a unique and thrilling experience that’s well worth it. However, keep in mind that this option may not be feasible with a rental car, as you’ll need the owner’s information, which they might be hesitant to share.
