I spent three days in Yogyakarta during the New Year, and I really love this city! Amidst the chaos, there is a sense of historical accumulation and unpolished nature. Thanks to Red Blue People Travel for letting me know about this place!!

I found a villa on Airbnb; the environment was decent and not too expensive.
❌But I would still recommend finding a more upscale one in Bali for a better experience. This one felt more like a countryside cottage, and the amenities were a bit disappointing, plus there were mosquitoes.
✅The advantage is that it’s really in a residential area, so there’s a super cheap large supermarket nearby (where I bought a lot of popular souvenirs, much cheaper than in Bali!!)

The most stunning part of my trip in Yogyakarta was the Jomblang Cave. I highly recommend seeing the Angel Light 🥺 It was a very close-to-nature experience. We arrived at the meeting point at 9 AM, had some tea and coffee, and then waited for the group to be lowered down the sinkhole in order of arrival.

After passing through the tropical rainforest 🌴, we entered a very dark natural cave. If it has rained, it can be quite muddy inside, so be careful not to slip.
When you start to hear the sound of water, it means you’re about to see it ❕
The first sight was incredibly stunning, the most beautiful Tyndall effect I’ve ever seen.

It felt like all the light in the world was gathered in that one spot.
The staff are also great at taking photos, and you will definitely get some good shots.
We were pulled back up from the sinkhole by hand. Interestingly, it hasn’t changed at all since I saw it in 2019 with the Blue Man!
It costs around RMB 200 per person, but it’s totally worth it!

On the first night, I went to the Royal Palace, Water Palace, and Malioboro Street, but they were all closed because we went late. There are many museums in Yogyakarta, but unfortunately, I didn’t get to see any. If you have the chance, you can visit them to learn about Javanese culture.
There are many shops on Malioboro Street, even a Mixue Bingcheng. Everything is very cheap!

I visited Prambanan, but didn’t have time for Borobudur. Personally, if you don’t hire a guide or have limited knowledge of Hinduism, visiting one is enough.
We went to Prambanan because Borobudur was closed on Monday. It was also very beautiful.
If you have enough time, you can explore the temples inside.

Since the Indonesian school groups don’t go inside, it was completely empty, allowing us to quietly experience the grandeur of the volcanic stone temples.
At the main temple, I was even pulled into an English corner by some school children, and they complimented me, hehe.

I ate at the famous House of Raminten. Southeast Asian food is generally similar, but the fresh juice was really delicious, and I had three glasses. The whole meal was also very affordable.
Overall, Yogyakarta is a cheap and quiet little city, truly an undiscovered treasure!
