Day 1:
Embark on an exciting journey from Guangzhou by plane
, with a brief stopover in Singapore
, before finally touching down in Surabaya, Indonesia. Upon arrival, head to an ATM to withdraw some local currency, then hop into a taxi for a ride to the bus station. From there, board a bus that will take you southward to the enchanting town of Malang
, the gateway to Mount Bromo.

We opted to stay in Malang due to its superior accommodation options compared to the nearby volcano town, and its convenient proximity to both the waterfall and the volcano.

Day 2:
After a refreshing rest, we joined a guided tour for an unforgettable volcano adventure. As the clock struck 3 AM, we set off with our guide, embarking on a thrilling night-time journey towards Mount Bromo. Winding through the mountain roads, we ascended to a small shop nestled below the volcano viewing platform.

A quick, simple breakfast fueled us up, and as the first light of dawn began to peek over the horizon, we hiked up to the summit to catch the breathtaking sunrise ! The chill at the top was intense; even with windbreakers and thermal wear, it was quite a challenge. With temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Celsius, be sure to pack plenty of warm clothing.

Many visitors, unprepared for the cold, rented blankets at the peak. As the sky gradually illuminated, the awe-inspiring crater came into full view, making every shiver worthwhile!

After the mesmerizing sunrise, our guide led us to a lesser-known spot for some stunning photo opportunities , steering clear of the more crowded areas. Each location offered its own unique charm. Next, we drove to the base of the volcano, where we had the option to either ride a horse or hike up. Opting for the walk, we made our way to the top.

Standing at the peak, surrounded by the vast expanse of the volcanic landscape, it felt as though we could hear the earthβs heartbeat and sense the immense energy emanating from deep within . It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Post-volcano exploration, our guide also took us to a hidden gem that resembled the picturesque landscapes of Switzerland, providing even more photo-worthy moments!

Personal advice: If youβre comfortable with English, consider skipping the small group tours and instead, ask locals for recommendations upon arrival. The hotel front desk can arrange a volcano exploration package for just 120 RMB, complete with pick-up and drop-off services and a hearty breakfast. Accommodations in Malang are budget-friendly, with many options available for around 150 RMB.
