Discover the enchanting Lake Toba, one of the world’s most captivating volcanic lakes. Formed around 74,000 years ago from a massive volcanic eruption, this lake boasts a depth of 505 meters, making it one of the deepest on the planet. Situated at an altitude of about 900 meters, the climate is refreshingly pleasant, offering a serene escape.
When you lay eyes on Lake Toba, you might feel like you’ve been transported to Austria 🇦🇹. The landscape is strikingly similar, with rolling hills and tranquil waters. A fellow traveler even mentioned it has a hint of Swiss charm 🇨🇭, adding to its allure.
In the heart of Lake Toba lies the vibrant Samosir Island 🌈, comparable in size to Singapore. This island is home to the Batak people, known for their unique traditional houses. The distinctive roof design is inspired by the boats they once used for escape, a testament to their rich history.
The Batak society traditionally follows a patriarchal structure. It’s said that men were often idle, preferring to marry women with large breasts, believing this would ensure ample milk for their many children. More children meant more hands to work, equating to greater wealth. Women, in addition to being constantly pregnant and giving birth, also carried out all the household chores. On average, each family had 12 children, according to local guides.
The Batak people also have unique burial customs. After a parent passes away, they are initially buried. The children then save money (for 5-20 years) before holding a ceremony similar to the Chinese “bone collection,” where the bones are exhumed and reburied. The tomb is constructed in the shape of their house, symbolizing a final resting place that mirrors their earthly homes.
Beyond their productivity, the Batak were once renowned for their witchcraft. However, in modern times, the power of money has replaced the need for magic. Today, most Batak people have embraced Christianity, and the island is home to the world’s largest statue of Jesus. Standing 61 meters tall on Sibea-bea Hill, this majestic statue offers breathtaking views of Lake Toba.
