Lake Toba in Indonesia is not just the largest lake in Southeast Asia but also the world’s largest volcanic lake, a breathtaking natural wonder that was formed 75,000 years ago by a cataclysmic volcanic eruption. Stretching 100 kilometers in length and 30 kilometers in width, this vast body of water is home to the enchanting Samosir Island, which is roughly the size of Singapore and sits majestically at its center.

The scenic beauty of Lake Toba is truly awe-inspiring, though the overall facilities have historically been modest. However, in 2023, the area welcomed its first five-star hotel, Marianna Resort, which I highly recommend. The resort’s location is nothing short of spectacular; you must book a lake-view room to fully appreciate the panoramic views of Lake Toba right from your bed.

Wake up early to catch the mesmerizing sunrise over the lake from your private balcony. The resort also boasts an infinity pool that seems to merge seamlessly with the lake, offering a surreal swimming experience. Additionally, it is conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from the Batak indigenous cultural village and only an hour away from the newly erected, world’s largest Jesus statue, which stands as a recent addition to the island, completed just six months ago.

I also can’t recommend enough their on-site spa, Fivelements, which offers a luxurious Balinese-style experience. With sister properties in Ubud, Bali, known for their villas and spa centers, Fivelements brings the same level of excellence to Lake Toba. The therapists, hailing from Bali, are exceptionally skilled, and after a rejuvenating massage, you can relax in a soothing massage pool, savor local specialty beverages, and relish the Balinese massage while taking in the stunning views of Lake Toba.

It’s a perfect blend of relaxation and natural beauty.

Lake Toba sounds absolutely stunning, and I can only imagine how incredible it must feel to stay at one of those five-star hotels with such breathtaking views. I’d love to visit Samosir Island someday—it would be amazing to explore its culture while enjoying the natural beauty.
