Friends, please do not wear flip-flops [crying emoji][crying emoji][crying emoji] After watching the sunset, I was at the exit calling the driver and felt something was wrong with my foot. A monkey crawled out from under the car and tried to take my shoe, scratching my toes until they bled. I had a staff member from the ticket office clean the wound with alcohol and apply a bandage.

She told me to go to a nearby clinic for a rabies vaccine [crying emoji][crying emoji][crying emoji]. I’m still in shock… The people at the clinic told me that first aid should involve cleaning with soap and then rinsing with running water for 15 minutes because the rabies virus is dissolved in fat.

I saw someone’s phone get snatched by a monkey right at the entrance. The monkey even knew to throw away the phone case and only take the phone. Many people also had their sunglasses stolen. I didn’t dare to take out my phone. In the end, after finishing the tour, I had a big incident at the exit [crying emoji][crying emoji][crying emoji]

I was scratched around 6:30 PM and didn’t get back to the hotel until 10:30 PM because I was scammed by a small clinic! They said my situation was high-risk and, besides the rabies vaccine, I needed immunoglobulin and two weeks of antiviral medication. One bottle of immunoglobulin costs ten million, you heard that right, 10M local currency.

According to my weight, I needed six bottles, totaling 72.6M, which is over 4,000 euros. I was really scared; at this price, it would be better to fly back to the Netherlands or Shanghai immediately. Luckily, I was poor, and my credit card limit wasn’t that high. I first thought of contacting the insurance company.
I also urgently asked for help on social media, and thankfully, a classmate asked a colleague in Bali, who said I was being scammed and directed me to a proper international hospital. The doctor there said that since the skin was broken and there was a little bleeding but no bone injury, I did not need immunoglobulin.
I also didn’t need antiviral drugs, just some antibacterial ointment on the wound. Two doses of the rabies vaccine cost less than 4M, about 190 euros. This black clinic must be exposed! Taking advantage of tourists in distress! The second picture is the bill they gave me. It’s really outrageous. I’m so angry, I’m going to confront them directly.
———Lesson!———
If you have any health issues, please go to a proper hospital rather than a street-side clinic!
Black clinic: Unicare Uluwatu Rabies Vaccine IV Drip Bali – Bali Belly Emergency Service
Proper international hospital: Siloam Hospital Denpasar (Even if Indonesia is somewhat chaotic, the facilities at a proper hospital are very good! Everything is in English, and they provide English reports and bills)
Wow, that sounds terrifying! I had no idea monkeys could be such a problem there. Good thing you got help quickly. Just another reason to stay super aware during visits like this.
Absolutely, those scams can be quite shocking! Monkeys there can indeed cause trouble, but most visitors have amazing experiences with proper caution. Your awareness is spot on—staying vigilant is key. Thanks for sharing, and safe travels!
