📍Central Java, Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is truly a gem among Southeast Asian small cities, offering an authentic and enriching experience! Despite the visa requirement, it’s even more inviting for long-term stays than Chiang Mai. The city is not overrun by tourists, making it a peaceful and affordable place to live. The locals are incredibly friendly, public transportation is efficient, and daily life is remarkably convenient.

Most residential areas feature charming single-story houses with open-air courtyards, providing a comfortable and serene living environment. The host shared that since opening their doors five months ago, I am the first Chinese guest 🇨🇳. The Indonesian Chinese community is warm and welcoming, though they do not speak Chinese.

This is due to historical anti-Chinese incidents, which led to the closure of Chinese schools and the adoption of Indonesian names. It’s both touching and inspiring to see how Chinese people have persevered and made a home in Indonesia! [Praise R]
