Setting off from INSEAD, I embarked on a scenic 9-kilometer trek through the enchanting Fontainebleau Forest, leading me to the charming artist village of Barbizon. I explored the former residence of Jean-François Millet, which has unfortunately fallen into private hands and is now poorly maintained, making it rather disappointing.
I would advise against buying a ticket to go inside. The main street of the town stretches gracefully from end to end, offering a peaceful, laid-back atmosphere with picturesque surroundings—perfect for a family outing with children. Near Millet’s former residence in the heart of the village, there’s a highly praised ice cream shop by the roadside, often drawing a cheerful crowd of visitors queuing up for a treat.
The trail offers a peaceful escape, with the forest feeling alive under the canopy. I noticed how the path winds past old stones, hinting at history. It’s a great route for families, though the Millet house left me a bit sad. Still, the quiet charm of Barbizon makes it worth the walk.
The path through Fontainebleau felt like stepping into a quiet story. I noticed how the town’s main street offered a calm vibe, perfect for a relaxed stroll. It’s a shame the Millet house isn’t open, but the surroundings still make the hike worthwhile.
