Socotra
In October, I embarked on a journey to Socotra—an isolated island that has been detached from the mainland for 18 million years. Imagine camping under a star-studded sky, surrounded by the otherworldly Dragon Blood Trees, with a view of the azure Indian Ocean stretching endlessly beyond pristine white sand dunes.

It was nothing short of breathtaking! The island is also home to natural canyon pools, untouched stalactite caves, rare plants and animals, and an untamed wilderness that feels like stepping back in time. For outdoor enthusiasts, this place is nothing less than paradise.

Itinerary
Getting around the island isn’t easy, and tours must be arranged through travel agencies. After spending eight days exploring, I realized that five days are sufficient to cover the main attractions. If you’re looking to avoid excessive hardship while still experiencing the highlights, here’s what not to miss:

❶ Fermhin Forest (p2-4)
The legendary Dragon Blood Tree forest—inspiration for the Plateau of Rito in *The Legend of Zelda*—is truly awe-inspiring. Camping beneath the stars, with the guide lighting a crackling bonfire, added an unforgettable touch to the experience.

❷ Detwah Lagoon (p5)
Perched atop a mountain, the lagoon offers a mesmerizing panorama. The water shimmers in vibrant shades of blue, creating a striking contrast where it meets the open sea—a sight so unique it leaves you speechless.

❸ Shuab Beach (p5)
A boat ride from Qalansiyah brings you to this secluded gem. Along the way, playful dolphins dart alongside the wooden vessel, while Socotra cormorants glide overhead. The soft white sands and crystal-clear waters make this beach a dreamlike escape—and best of all, you’ll likely have it entirely to yourself.

❹ Homhil Infinity Pool (p6)
During the flowering season from March to May, desert roses burst into bloom around this natural infinity pool. The pool itself is a marvel, offering the chance to swim and sunbathe while gazing out at the endless horizon of the sea. Standing on the jagged rocks nearby, you can almost feel like a modern-day explorer charting uncharted territory. Note: Always return via the same route; descending the rear mountain path is steep and perilous.

❺ Kalissan Canyon (p6)
After a one-hour drive to the Momi plateau, embark on a 40-minute downhill hike to reach this hidden wonderland. The canyon’s natural pools gleam amber in the sunlight, perfect for a refreshing dip or even some rock climbing.

❻ Arher White Sand Dunes (p7)
Climbing these towering dunes may test your stamina, but the reward is a breathtaking vista that makes every step worthwhile. Early morning visits offer optimal lighting conditions. Conveniently located near the whale bones at the island’s eastern tip, you can combine both stops into one memorable excursion.
✈️ Flights
Due to monsoon currents, flights to Socotra are most reliable from October to April. From May to September, flights occur roughly every two weeks but are subject to frequent cancellations due to poor weather conditions. Most travelers opt for round-trip flights from Abu Dhabi (though Cairo also offers flights, they tend to be unreliable). Refer to pages 15-17 for the 2025 flight schedule.
Accommodation
Camping in tents provides an affordable and immersive experience, though challenges include limited access to hot showers, spotty internet connectivity, and rugged living conditions. However, for those seeking true adventure, these minor inconveniences only enhance the charm of this extraordinary destination.
We spent one magical night camping in the Dragon Blood Tree forest, while the rest of our time was enjoyed at Summerland in Hadibo. This charming spot offered excellent amenities, including steady hot water, reliable internet, and impeccable cleanliness.
🍴 Cuisine
In Hadibo, our go-to destination was Shabwa, the town’s largest and most iconic restaurant, which first opened its doors in 1999. The fried chicken was irresistible, the milk tea divine, and the baked bread? It was so colossal, it dwarfed my face! For those who prefer cooking their own meals, gas stoves were readily available. And for fellow fans of Chinese flavors, don’t forget to pack some Shin Ramyun—it’s a comforting taste of home.
💲 Souvenirs
The country’s 100-denomination banknote proudly features the legendary Dragon Blood Tree. You can exchange these notes at BinDowal in Hadibo. Keep in mind that the exchange rate for US dollars to the local currency is 1:1850, though the airport offers them for a cheeky price of five US dollars each 😅.
