Refueling: In the South Island, most gas stations operate on a self-service basis, offering two convenient methods depending on the station you visit. One method involves selecting the number of liters you wish to add and then paying at the counter (p3). The other option requires pre-authorizing a 250 NZD charge on your credit card.

Keep in mind that the card reader is conveniently located near the pump—first, input the fuel pump number followed by the amount you’d like to add. Once your card is successfully processed, you can begin refueling, with the final price calculated based on the actual fuel dispensed. For a full tank, simply choose the “FILL” option.

Speeding Fines: While there are no speed cameras on New Zealand roads, police cars can catch you off guard when you least expect them. During my drive from Twizel to Oamaru, the flat, straight road with minimal traffic lured me into cruising at 120 km/h, well above the 100 km/h limit. Suddenly, a police car appeared behind me with its siren blaring.

When this happens, pull over safely as soon as possible. You have the right to ask the officer why you were stopped. They’ll review your documents and ask you to remain in your vehicle while they verify the details. Later, they’ll provide a business card outlining the fine amount and payment instructions.

Paying the fine online via credit card is straightforward. My speeding ticket cost me 120 NZD, but remember, driving too slowly can also result in fines. To stay safe, maintain a speed between 90-110 km/h when the limit is 100 km/h.

Returning the Car: Returning your rental car at Christchurch Airport is simple if you follow these steps. Head toward the Novotel Hotel, where you’ll find a spacious parking lot across the street. Look for RENT CAR signs along the way to guide you. Before exiting the vehicle, check for any noticeable dirt, such as mud on the floor mats, and remove it to avoid cleaning charges.

Ensure the fuel tank is full to prevent being hit with inflated refill fees. Locate the appropriate counter, hand over the keys, and inform the attendant of your parking spot (a photo of the fuel gauge and parking area can be helpful). If you’re returning the car outside business hours, simply deposit the keys in the designated key box.
