Embarking on my first visit to the South American continent via a cruise, I couldn’t help but wonder if this was truly the most budget-friendly way to explore South America [side-eye R]. During the trip, I signed up for a guided tour of Cartagena. Upon disembarking, I noticed an incredibly long queue for taxis, which might be something to consider for those planning to venture out independently.
The tour itinerary was packed to the brim. We kicked things off at one of Cartagena’s iconic landmarks, the Castillo San Felipe (p2). Unfortunately, we barely had enough time to do more than snap a quick photo outside—stepping inside remained a missed opportunity [crying R]. After a fleeting stop at a bustling little market, we embarked on a walking tour through the city. The February heat was relentless, and I came dangerously close to succumbing to heatstroke [laugh-cry R].
Cartagena’s Spanish colonial old town (p3-p11) is nothing short of breathtaking. Its vibrantly colored buildings create a photographer’s paradise. It’s also one of Colombia’s most significant UNESCO World Heritage sites—a fascinating glimpse into history, even though visiting a colony before its motherland feels a bit like putting the cart before the horse.
Our tour included stops at the Palace of the Inquisition, two stunning churches, the Naval Museum, and other attractions. We were then granted 30 minutes of free time to explore on our own. The streets buzzed with life, filled with vendors offering everything from handmade crafts to fresh fruit, exuding an unmistakably Latin American charm [laugh-cry R].
Close to the pier lies a small, open-air wildlife area (p12-p14), where parrots, flamingos, and monkeys roam freely, providing ample opportunities for memorable photos against a backdrop of quintessential Colombian scenery. For those who prefer not to stray too far, simply wandering around the vicinity after disembarking offers plenty to see and enjoy.
In summary, as a major hub of Spanish colonial history, Cartagena boasts a rich tapestry of culture and heritage, all set against the backdrop of a picturesque seaside resort. I’d easily give it a 9/10 rating. Let’s face it, the sheer distance between China and South America makes any trip here no small feat [disappointed R]. I’m already dreaming of returning someday for a more in-depth independent exploration of this enchanting destination.
