Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once synonymous with drug trafficking and violent crime under the infamous reign of Pablo Escobar, Medellín has emerged from its dark past to become a vibrant and sought-after tourist destination.
🌟 **Comuna 13**: Medellín is divided into 16 comunas, and Comuna 13 stands out as one of the most iconic areas in the city. This neighborhood was once a hotspot for drug cartels and urban guerrilla activity. In 2002, the Colombian government launched a major military operation here, leading to significant upheaval.
Since then, Comuna 13 has transformed dramatically. Street art now adorns the walls, breathing new life into the community. A series of outdoor escalators—part of one of the longest public escalator systems in the world—has made the area more accessible and connected, symbolizing its journey from adversity to renewal.
🌟 **Plaza Botero**: Located in the heart of Medellín, Plaza Botero is a celebrated public space named after Fernando Botero, one of Latin America’s most renowned artists, who passed away this September. Botero’s signature style exaggerates human figures and objects, creating a unique and playful aesthetic.
The plaza showcases 23 monumental bronze sculptures by Botero, each inviting visitors to reflect on his artistic vision. Nearby, the Museum of Antioquia offers an even deeper dive into Botero’s work. On the third floor, a dedicated collection displays some of his masterpieces (though photography is prohibited).
During our visit, only 40% of the collection was on display, leaving room for future exploration.
🌟 **Cable Car**: Highly recommended! Medellín’s cable car system is seamlessly integrated with the metro network, offering breathtaking views of the city and its surrounding mountains. Locals suggest taking the K line, which connects to Parque Arví, a stunning natural park. To reach it, take the metro to Acevedo station, where you can transfer to the K line.
From there, you can continue to the L line, which leads directly to Parque Arví. Note that the L line stops operating at 6 PM, so if you plan to visit the park, aim to arrive at the L line’s starting point by 5:30 PM. If you miss the timing, consider walking down from the Santo Domingo terminal along the cable car route—it leads to a scenic viewpoint with panoramic vistas of the city.
**Transportation**: Getting around Medellín is straightforward and affordable. A taxi from the airport to the city center costs approximately 80,000 pesos, but Uber is an excellent alternative, requiring no Spanish communication. On your way from the airport, you’ll pass through the Tunel de Oriente, once South America’s longest road tunnel.
Emerging from the tunnel, you’re greeted by stunning views of the city nestled in the mountains. Within the city, the metro is a convenient option. To use it, purchase a rechargeable card, which you’ll tap upon entry (no need to tap upon exit). Cards can be shared among multiple travelers, and a single trip costs around 3,000 pesos.
⚠️Safety Tips: Keep a close eye on your belongings! If someone approaches you, it’s best not to engage. More often than not, they’ll try to ask for money in creative ways, and some might even take a photo with you before demanding payment. Stay alert and protect yourself from such situations.
