Good evening, dear friends! 🌙✨

For the past month, I’ve felt like I’ve been stuck on a plateau—unchanging, uneventful. But this week, I finally came down from it. ⛰️Descending into relaxation, however, has surprisingly left me feeling rather drained. (I can barely seem to wake up, and doing anything feels like a chore!) Lately, I’ve been a bit lazy, so please bear with me—hahaha. Starting today, though, I’m ready to jump back into daily updates! 👏

Today, I’m excited to share with you Phase D2 of my journey through Salento, Colombia:
——— Valle de Cocora (Cocora Valley) ———

1⃣️ My story here? Let me tell you…

Coffee and the Cocora Valley were without a doubt the highlights of my trip through Colombia. If I had to compare it to anything, it would be coffee itself—I fell head over heels for this place!

On Day 111 of my global adventure, I woke up early, still groggy but buzzing with excitement. I headed straight to the jeep station in the central square and bought a ticket. The bus departs promptly at 7:30 AM, one way costing just 5000 pesos (about €1.25). After securing my spot, I wandered nearby for some fresh coffee and breakfast to fuel my morning.

When I returned, the vehicle was already packed to the brim. One of the staff members approached me and kindly asked if I’d mind standing at the back of the car. Of course! How could I refuse such an epic opportunity?

What followed was one of the most unforgettable mornings of my life. Standing at the rear of the car, leaning against the rugged roof of the jeep, I let the crisp mountain breeze whip through my hair while soaking in breathtaking views. With one hand gripping the handle for balance and the other cradling my warm cup of coffee ☕️, I reveled in the moment. Even my mouth wasn’t idle—I struck up a lively conversation with a newfound friend beside me, practicing my Spanish along the way.

Our first hour of hiking took us deep into the heart of the Cocora Valley, surrounded by towering, majestic wax palms. 🌴 It’s a sight that leaves you utterly spellbound. At this point, hikers have a choice: turn back or keep going. Having fallen in love with hiking during this trip, there was no question—I had to push forward!
The trail stretches for about 4-5 hours (or roughly 3 if you don’t stop), winding through lush forests and crossing crystal-clear rivers. By the time we looped back to where the jeep had dropped us off, I had not only marveled at stunning scenery but also met countless fascinating people, including two incredible friends from Bogotá, Colombia.
(Detailed vlog coming tomorrow—stay tuned, hahaha!)
2⃣️ Practical Tips for Your Visit:
Where exactly is the Cocora Valley?
✔️ Nestled in the heart of Colombia
✔️ A scenic drive west of Bogotá, approximately 8-9 hours away
(For more details on how to get there, check out my earlier post on Salento.)
Do you need a tour guide? Absolutely not!
The valley is dotted with clear signs, making navigation a breeze. You won’t get lost easily, so feel free to explore independently.
If you’re visiting during the rainy season, rent rain boots—they’ll save your feet from the muddy terrain. I visited during the dry season (late July 2023), yet even then, the river sections were slightly muddy. Poor new hiking shoes… 😢
Difficulty Levels & Recommendations:
✔️ For seniors, children, or those who simply want to snap some photos:
👉 Stick to the Cocora Valley section—it’s easy, picturesque, and perfect for casual strolls.
✔️ For those eager to experience hiking and enjoy light trekking (even without proper gear):
👉 Hike from the Cocora Valley up to the top. The slope is gentle, the views are stunning, and it’s manageable for all levels. Just remember, avoid heading downhill unless you’re prepared—it can be slippery and muddy.
✔️ For seasoned hikers with great stamina:
👉 Tackle the entire route—it’s relatively straightforward and offers an unforgettable adventure.
