Exploring Cartagena as a Tourist, Not a Tour Guide | Travel Tips

😊
This time, I embarked on a business trip to the northern coast with over a dozen colleagues from my company. We decided to charter a boat for an excursion out to sea, and it was my very first time doing so! The experience far surpassed anything I could have imagined compared to simply buying tickets. If you’re traveling with a large family or organizing a company outing, I highly recommend chartering a boat—it truly elevates the adventure!

One of the greatest advantages of chartering a boat is the freedom to explore wherever your heart desires. You can handpick the islands you wish to visit. During our trip, our boat featured a net at the front where we could sprawl out and let the waves gently rock us—an utterly exhilarating experience! 😅 As we ventured deeper into the Caribbean Sea, the water transformed into mesmerizing shades of blue—ranging from pale turquoise to deep sapphire. It was like stepping into a painting.

However, venturing out to sea does come with its challenges. Expect some sizeable waves and a bumpy ride. If you’re prone to seasickness, make sure to take medication beforehand. Opting for a larger boat equipped with cabins and beds can be a lifesaver; if the motion becomes too much, you can retreat to a cabin, lie down, and even catch some sleep. Staying toward the front of the boat also tends to help alleviate discomfort.

There’s something incredibly liberating about not being a tour guide. Without the usual sense of responsibility or the small annoyances that come with leading a group, Cartagena felt more enjoyable than ever. Still, I couldn’t resist recommending two of my favorite restaurants, and everyone raved about the delicious food. It made me feel quite accomplished! 😛

The old city remains as enchanting as ever. After Holy Week, the city enters its low season, meaning fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere. I revisited the city walls to watch the sunset, and as always, the golden hues casting across Cartagena were nothing short of soothing.

If you don’t speak Spanish but are interested in visiting Cartagena, feel free to reach out to me—I’d be happy to assist. On the other hand, if you do speak Spanish, you can easily navigate the city on your own without needing a guide. Cartagena is a well-equipped tourist destination, though I must admit, prices seem to be climbing steadily these days—hahaha. Nonetheless, it remains a gem worth exploring!
