Cocora is my all-time favorite spot in Colombia—a serene retreat that feels like stepping back into the simplicity of life’s essentials.

Salento, a charming little town, can be strolled end to end in just ten minutes. From one of its higher vantage points, you’re treated to breathtaking views of the valley and the golden hues of the sunset. If your schedule allows, linger for a few extra days to explore some of the lesser-known gems nearby. It’s the perfect way to unwind and soak in the tranquility.

Jeeps bound for Cocora depart from Salento’s main square, with tickets available starting at 7 a.m. These jeeps set off once they’ve gathered a group of 8 to 10 passengers. Cocora offers two hiking trails: the shorter loop is an easier trek with stunning scenery, while the longer route takes about five hours and promises encounters with forest streams and countless hummingbirds.

Although I’d already marveled at enough hummingbirds in Costa Rica, I opted for the gentler path of the smaller loop, where I still enjoyed spotting a diverse array of birds.

Coffee tours also leave by jeep from the main square, offering access to numerous plantations. The largest is Ocaso, but other favorites include Acacias, Azarcia, and Buenos Aires. Compared to the coffee tour I experienced in Costa Rica, this one was undeniably more engaging and educational, even allowing me to try my hand at picking coffee beans.

P.S.: If you’re planning to buy coffee beans in Colombia, be prepared—they aren’t cheap! A 250g-500g bag typically costs around 70-100 RMB. Interestingly, beans are pricier than ground coffee for the same product.

A local specialty in Salento is trout, which can be served fried, grilled, or smothered in a rich cheese and mushroom sauce. I dined at Donde Laurita, the most celebrated eatery in town, but, alas, the taste was only mediocre (haha). One thing that never disappoints, though, is the guava milkshake—it’s always a delightful choice.

To reach Salento: Fly into Armenia and take a taxi to Salento. For a budget-friendly alternative, hop on a bus or grab a taxi to the central bus terminal in Armenia, then catch a minibus straight to Salento.
