The Columbia River Gorge is a paradise for wildflower enthusiasts. Over the years, I’ve explored numerous spots and trekked countless trails, but the Tom McCall Preserve remains my top pick. While the wildflowers here aren’t as abundant as those in Olalla, the breathtaking backdrop of two conical snow-capped mountains adds an unparalleled charm to the scenery.
The parking area can be quite windy, with wildflowers scattered about, but once you begin your ascent up the hill, the wind subsides almost entirely. The trail stretches for 3 miles and offers a slightly more challenging hike compared to Olalla. However, the vibrant wildflowers lining the path and the stunning vistas of the Columbia River Gorge make the journey feel effortless and exhilarating.
The yellow blooms are beginning to fade, but the purple lupines are thriving, though their colors don’t pop as vividly through the lens.
On the trail, I encountered two remarkable women, each with one prosthetic leg, climbing the mountain with determination and radiant smiles. Their spirit was truly inspiring. Every hiker I crossed paths with exuded warmth and kindness. We exchanged friendly greetings, chatted about the weather and scenery, and graciously made way for one another on narrow sections of the trail, always accompanied by grateful smiles.
Some even offered to take photos for fellow travelers, and when we paused by the roadside to rest, others kindly inquired if we needed assistance. It was an atmosphere brimming with positivity and camaraderie!
