Even though there’s no National Day holiday in a foreign country, I decided to treat myself to a well-deserved break and embarked on a self-drive adventure through Colombia 🇨🇴 [Cute R]
Salento, a charming little town, is a must-visit, especially when paired with a hike through the stunning Cocora Valley. It felt like at least half the town was buzzing with international visitors—it’s that popular! [Laughing R]
When it comes to exploring Cocora Valley, the longer loop is definitely worth your time. The shorter route, while picturesque, feels more like a quick photo stop. On the other hand, the longer loop takes you deep into the jungle, offering not just stunning views but also an exhilarating sense of adventure.
You’ll trek through lush greenery, cross babbling streams, and marvel at towering wax palms—all while feeling like you’re stepping into a postcard. Whether you choose to walk clockwise or counterclockwise, both options lead to unforgettable moments. We went clockwise simply because we missed the counterclockwise entrance (it’s right next to where the jeeps park).
Though the scenery feels similar along the way, if you want to capture those iconic short-loop shots, you might end up retracing your steps a bit, just like we did.
Keep in mind, the longer loop spans about 12 kilometers and typically takes 4–5 hours to complete, so don’t start too late in the day. Jeep services are available from Salento’s main square if you need a ride back. ⚠️ For this trek, proper hiking shoes are essential—there are plenty of streams and muddy patches along the jungle path. And don’t forget to pack a raincoat; the weather can change in an instant, and you wouldn’t want to get caught unprepared in a sudden downpour! 🌧️
