These days, headlines are buzzing with reports that 20,000 bodies were discovered at a Colombian airport. While the truth remains under investigation—and let’s face it, rumors often spread like wildfire for attention alone—many travelers planning a trip to Colombia are understandably concerned about safety. Having just returned from Colombia in February, I’d like to share my firsthand experiences and insights into the country’s security situation:
1. Medellín, famously known as the city of drug lords and immortalized in countless Hollywood blockbusters, does have its chaotic side. However, during my entire stay, as long as I avoided venturing out at night, I encountered no significant issues. The city has transformed dramatically over the years, but staying cautious is still key.
2. Bogotá, the capital, feels quite secure during daylight hours. That said, exploring remote or less populated areas isn’t advisable. Taxis are your best friend here, helping you navigate the city while avoiding trouble spots. Overall, locals tend to be friendly and welcoming, making Bogotá a relatively pleasant destination if you play it safe.
3. Of all the cities I visited, Medellín was undoubtedly the most unpredictable. As the former stronghold of drug cartels, its reputation precedes it. For peace of mind, stick to upscale neighborhoods and consider hiring a guide if you’re keen on experiencing the nightlife. Though beautifully modernized today, certain areas, such as the old town or slums, are best explored through organized day tours rather than solo adventures. Safety should always come first in these parts.
4. On the brighter side, destinations like Cartagena exude charm and security. Filled with affluent residents and well-maintained infrastructure, this coastal gem offers visitors a stress-free experience. Whether strolling along cobblestone streets or relaxing by the sea, Cartagena proves that Colombia has much to offer in terms of both beauty and safety.
So, while caution is warranted, Colombia remains a fascinating and diverse country worth exploring—if approached with care and awareness.
