Bali might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’d highly recommend flying directly to Lombok in the east for a more exciting adventure.

I spent a few days in Indonesia over the winter break, exploring Bali, Nusa Penida, and the Gili Islands. Along the way, I met some fellow travelers heading to Lombok, so here’s my take on these four stunning islands:

🍎 **Bali**: The island shines when it comes to luxury at an affordable price. During the off-season, you can snag a room in a three-star hotel with a private pool for just over 200 RMB! A one-and-a-half-hour spa session will set you back only 70-80 RMB. However, the beaches here are fairly average, making Bali ideal for those who want to indulge in comfort, relaxation, and top-notch hospitality rather than pristine shores.

🍏 **Nusa Penida** (or simply Penida Island): This is a paradise for photography enthusiasts. Some of the most iconic Windows wallpapers have been shot here! The brighter the sun, the better your photos will turn out, so avoid cloudy days. The island offers two routes—east and west—for sightseeing. Renting a car for either route costs around 200 RMB, and staying near the pier is recommended. If you’re after breathtaking views and perfect shots, the west route is your best bet.

🍊 **Gili Islands**: Of the three main Gili Islands, I visited Gili Trawangan (often referred to as T Island). Cycling around this tranquil island on a shared bike is effortless and enjoyable, and the beaches are absolutely stunning. For a peaceful stay, consider booking accommodations south of the pier where it’s quieter and the shoreline is more serene.

Snorkeling is a must-do activity here, costing about 60-70 RMB per person—a steal! Be sure to rent a snorkel and goggles beforehand for around ten RMB and practice in your hotel pool the day before to make the most of your underwater adventure.

🍋 **Lombok**: My friends raved about this island, calling it a true gem. With its endless beaches and vibrant culture, Lombok offers a more adventurous experience compared to Bali. To fully explore the island, renting a car is essential, and don’t forget to secure an international driver’s license before your trip.

Even if you’re already in Bali when you come across this post, fret not—there are boats that connect to other islands. The journey to Lombok takes about two to three hours, so pack some seasickness medicine just in case. Whether you choose Bali or Lombok, Indonesia has something magical waiting for every traveler!
