This trip to Spain and Portugal, unfortunately constrained by time, allowed us to rent a car only for the latter part of our journey.
[StarR] Route: Granada ~ Seville ~ Faro ~ Lisbon ~ Madrid
Except for the roughly 600-kilometer stretch from Lisbon to Madrid, the other segments averaged around 200-300 kilometers per day, creating a relatively relaxed and enjoyable pace.
[StarR] Car Rental Company: Alamo
Alamo may not be one of the larger rental companies, but it proved efficient and flexible. We booked through an online platform, paying only a deposit upfront. Upon arrival, we communicated smoothly with the staff, signed the necessary contracts, and used a credit card as security.
Typically, this must belong to the primary driver, but due to an issue with their card, I used mine instead—luckily, the staff were accommodating. As this was a family trip, we rented two vehicles and opted for full insurance. The narrow city streets in both Spain and Portugal make scratches quite common, so purchasing comprehensive coverage is highly recommended.
[StarR] Before setting off, be sure to clarify fueling arrangements. In our case, one car required gasoline while the other ran on diesel. It’s also essential to confirm the location of the fuel tank to avoid any mix-ups.
[StarR] Most gas stations along the route have helpful attendants who can assist with refueling, so there’s no need to worry about doing it yourself.
[StarR] Spanish highways appeared to be toll-free, but some sections in Portugal do require payment. Simply use the card payment lanes, which operate similarly to systems back home: collect a card upon entry, return it when exiting, and settle the fee via bank card.
[StarR] Parking fees can be steep, but the hotels we booked along the way offered their own parking facilities at more reasonable rates.
I strongly recommend choosing accommodations that include parking spaces whenever possible.
[StarR] The overall drive was smooth and pleasant, with minimal traffic outside urban areas. Compared to our previous trip through Switzerland and Austria, drivers here seemed less aggressive and more considerate.
[StarR] Exercise caution when navigating the cities of Spain and Portugal. Vehicles always yield to pedestrians, so always double-check your surroundings at traffic lights and crosswalks.
[StarR] Roundabouts are abundant, making it easy to take a wrong turn. Stay alert and keep your wits about you!
