There are two main options for traveling by bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta:

1. Hop on the local bus, which travels directly between suburban stations without entering the bustling city centers. Under perfect conditions, the ride takes around 5.5 hours and costs 60,000 COP. To catch it, head to the bus stop near point 1 in Cartagena, where buses heading to the right depart. The fare here is a modest 3,300 COP, paid in cash with change provided.

Nearby, you’ll find a small food stall (point 2) run by an exceptionally kind owner who will kindly inform you when your bus arrives. Even though I was suffering from a toothache, I indulged in some fried treats and decided to support his little business.

The bus to Cartagena will pass through point 3 along its route.

Points 4, 5, and 6 mark the location of the Cartagena bus station. If you’re unsure about anything, don’t hesitate to ask locals—there are always helpful people guiding drivers and assisting passengers.

Points 7 and 9 indicate the Santa Marta bus station. Once you disembark, cross the overpass at point 8, and on the other side, you’ll find blue buses that conveniently take you to the city center. The fare is 2,700 COP, also paid in cash with change given. Interestingly, the bus driver understands the word “center” in English, so communication is a breeze.

2. Alternatively, opt for a tourist minibus for a more comfortable journey. The one I checked out costs 80,000 COP and even accepts credit card payments. Ideally, this trip takes approximately 4.5 hours. The pickup points are indicated at locations 10 and 11.
