Lake Llanquihue, a breathtaking gem located just 20 kilometers north of Puerto Montt, Chile, is encircled by a dramatic backdrop of several volcanoes, including the iconic Osorno Volcano 🌋. The charming towns scattered around the lake each boast their own unique character, making it an ideal destination for a self-driving adventure. The journey is not only relaxing but also allows you to pause and soak in the stunning scenery at your leisure.

### Regarding Car Rental
We booked our car 🚗 in advance through the Zuzuche app, and the pick-up location was conveniently situated right across from where we collected our luggage at the airport, at a row of counters. The local rental company, SIXT, generously upgraded us for free to a Tucson, enhancing our driving experience.

### Regarding the Itinerary
Our journey began at the southernmost point of the lake, Puerto Varas, and we drove counterclockwise.
– **First Stop: Black Sand Beach** – At the foot of the majestic Osorno Volcano 🌋, this beach 🏖️ is composed of volcanic ash and rock, creating a strikingly black landscape.

Here, you can find beautiful, washed volcanic stones scattered everywhere.
– **Second Stop: Town of Calle** – Just a short distance from the black sand beach, this quaint little town offers a similar type of beach, perfect for a quick stop to stretch your legs and take in the views.
– **Third Stop: Puerto Octay** – Nestled in the northwest corner of the lake, this town provides a stunning view of the Osorno Volcano across the water.

It’s a serene spot to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
– **Fourth Stop: Frutillar** – The highlight of our lake tour, Frutillar is a picturesque town that faces the volcano directly. With a yacht dock by the lakeside and numerous scenic spots, it’s a photographer’s paradise. The fine volcanic ash sand and the inviting waters, though it was autumn, were surprisingly warm under the sun, making it a delightful place to swim.

### 💡 TIPS
1. The temperature difference between day and night in the Lake Llanquihue area is quite significant, with daytime temperatures reaching 26 degrees and nighttime temperatures dropping to as low as 6 degrees. Be sure to pack layers to stay comfortable.
2. The full loop around the lake is approximately 200 kilometers, and there’s no need to worry about refueling mid-way; you can fill up at the starting point and go.

3. Free parking 🅿️ is available on the roadside near the towns and beaches, but be cautious and avoid leaving valuables in the car.
4. While there are restaurants in the towns, it’s a good idea to bring some bread 🥖 along, just in case you can’t find a restaurant during your drive.
