After a quick stop in Santiago to transfer and store my luggage at the airport, I hopped into an Uber and headed to the city center for a whirlwind tour. My main stops were the iconic Plaza de Armas and the scenic San Cristóbal Hill. Given the safety concerns in the Plaza de Armas area, which many of my friends on Xiaohongshu had flagged, I made sure to travel light, leaving all valuables behind.

My friend and I took turns being vigilant while snapping photos, ensuring we stayed safe and enjoyed the experience. I strongly advise everyone to be extra cautious when visiting this area.

While the Plaza de Armas in Santiago is a popular spot, I found it somewhat underwhelming compared to its counterparts in other South American cities. If you’re pressed for time, it might be one you can skip. However, San Cristóbal Hill is a must-visit. The hill offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city, and the vibrant atmosphere, with locals rollerblading and relaxing, adds a laid-back charm.

The journey up via the funicular and down by cable car is not only enjoyable but also a great way to take in the sights without getting too tired.

That sounds like a great budget-friendly itinerary! I’ve heard about the safety concerns in Plaza de Armas, so traveling light is definitely smart. Did you find the views from San Cristóbal Hill worth it?
