Rio de Janeiro is nothing short of breathtaking, boasting a stunning array of attractions that make it one of the world’s most captivating cities. The harmonious blend of the bay’s shimmering waters, towering rocky mountains, golden beaches, and modern skyscrapers creates an awe-inspiring three-dimensional landscape that leaves visitors in awe.
The city is served by several airports, and I arrived at its largest, located on an island, with the airport code GIG. From there, convenient buses shuttle passengers into the city for around 15 reais, dropping you off at the central station in downtown Rio. When purchasing your bus ticket, you can also acquire the city’s public transportation card, which can be recharged as needed.
Rio de Janeiro operates two distinct public transport systems: the classic and the modern. The older buses accept cash payments, while the newer, semi-enclosed models require the use of a transportation card to access their services. For ease of travel, it’s highly recommended to purchase the public transportation card right at the airport.
For accommodation, staying near either of the city’s iconic beaches is ideal, as both areas are vibrant hubs of tourism. These neighborhoods offer unparalleled convenience when it comes to dining, lodging, and exploring the city. However, some bus routes can be rather winding, making taxis a more efficient option for certain destinations. Rest assured, the bus network still provides comprehensive coverage of all the major landmarks and attractions.
