I’ve strolled around the scenic loop of Cixi Kaulao Mountain a few times, but this was my first adventure climbing all the way to Rio de Janeiro Peak. 🚗 Start your journey by navigating to the Kaulao Mountain Scenic Area (paid parking available). Alternatively, you can opt for the Baiyang Waterfall parking lot (free, though it requires a bit more walking).

Begin your ascent from the Kaulao Mountain parking lot (6️⃣ legs reference route 8381524), following the well-groomed mountain trail upward. Soon, you’ll encounter a fork in the path where the tame trail transitions into a wilder one. The climb becomes steep here, with plenty of loose rocks underfoot, but don’t worry—it’s still manageable and not overly challenging.

Before long, you’ll reach the summit. The entire trek spans approximately 5.5 kilometers.

The wind at the peak is famously fierce, so plan your climb for a clear, sunny day if possible. Otherwise, thick fog may obscure the stunning views and hinder your photography opportunities. Thankfully, the trail is easy to follow, and you’ll encounter plenty of fellow hikers along the way. At the entrance to the ancient pathway, vendors offer snacks, refreshing drinks, and bottled water to keep you fueled and hydrated.

P.S.: If the official paid parking lot at Kaulao Mountain feels crowded, consider parking in nearby residents’ private yards. Just be aware that these informal lots also charge a fee.
