The incident unfolded at the bustling square in front of the São Paulo Cathedral. Knowing the area had a reputation for chaos, we planned to take a quick glance and leave, keeping our phones and valuables securely tucked away in our bags. However, our plans were interrupted when one of us suddenly found ourselves splattered with an unidentifiable, dirty substance. [Stunned R] Sensing something was amiss, we quickly decided to exit the square as swiftly as possible.

As we made our way out, a local approached us, attempting to communicate. Despite the language barrier, his gestures seemed to indicate something on our clothing. Initially, we assumed it was a courteous warning. But then, using broken English and exaggerated motions, he suggested there was a restroom nearby in an alley where we could clean up.

His overly dramatic behavior and insistence set off alarm bells. After a few brief exchanges, we excused ourselves and hastily entered a nearby office building, where we retrieved our phones and summoned a taxi.

It wasn’t until we were safely inside the car that we finally wiped the mysterious liquid from our clothes. As the taxi drove past the alley the man had pointed out, we noticed clusters of homeless individuals and suspicious figures trying to stop cars and approach drivers, leaving us with a lingering sense of unease… [Freaking Out R]

I strongly urge travelers to São Paulo to steer clear of the cathedral area if possible, particularly when alone. Be wary of anyone attempting to strike up conversations in unfamiliar settings, and avoid being lured into unknown areas or establishments to prevent falling into potential traps.
