For instance, it’s wise to invest in a wrist strap for your phone, especially one that can be worn on your hand. When using public transportation, always keep your bag in front of you, and avoid placing valuables like wallets and phones in your pockets. It’s best to keep your phone in your bag when not in use.
Certain areas, such as La Boca with its vibrant, colorful houses, are less safe even during daylight hours. Locals often advise tourists to be extra cautious about theft, particularly at night. Additionally, crowded spots like Retiro train station and the Obelisk are hotspots for pickpockets. Another key tip is to steer clear of large crowds, such as those during protests or gatherings, as these situations provide opportunities for thieves.
In summary, generally, the further south you go in the city, the more cautious you should be 
Next, let’s delve into the intriguing world of currency exchange in Argentina. This country stands out with its multiple exchange rates, but we’ll focus on the most commonly discussed: the official rate and the black market rate, with the latter being higher.
If you need to exchange currency, I don’t personally offer any services, but I can recommend some options.
Florida Street is a popular spot where you’ll find people shouting “cambio” (exchange) all around. For a more formal and secure option, head to Western Union or search for “casa de cambio” on Google to find places to exchange cash for pesos. It’s worth noting that US dollars, especially new $100 bills, are preferred; damaged or smaller denominations will fetch a lower rate on the black market.
Alternatively, many Chinese supermarkets and restaurants in Chinatown (Barrio Chino) also offer currency exchange.
To stay updated on the daily USD to peso exchange rate, download the app Dolar Blue Hoy (P5). Starting from April 14, 2025, Argentina will officially lift foreign exchange controls and implement a single floating exchange rate, making the Dólar Cripto a more reliable indicator of the black market dollar rate.
Of course, you can also pay directly with Visa, MasterCard, or American Express, though some establishments in Argentina may offer a small discount for cash payments. As foreign exchange controls are gradually lifted in 2025, the future trend of the peso exchange rate remains uncertain. Some analysts predict a unified exchange rate, but opinions on this vary.
Upon arriving in Buenos Aires, you can easily get a tourist data SIM card by visiting any Claro store with your passport. Simply search for Claro on Google to find the nearest location.
