Foraging in Fontainebleau Forest: A Guide to Mushroom Hunting and Chestnut Picking

The weather is absolutely splendid today, with clear skies and a gentle breeze.
I hopped on the R line train departing from Gare du Nord, heading towards the charming stop at Thomery.
Upon arrival, the magnificent Fontainebleau Forest greeted me just steps away from the station.
Along the scenic trails, I discovered an abundance of mushrooms and chestnuts scattered about.

While many were visually striking and perfect for photographs, I learned that the most attractive ones are often not safe to eat.
In the end, I carefully gathered just one variety of mushroom,
and after consulting a guide, identified it as the delightful Lactaire Délicieux.

  1. The chestnuts scattered under the trees made for a quiet, rewarding hunt. I noticed how the most colorful mushrooms weren’t always the safe ones. It’s smart to take time and know what you’re picking. A simple but thoughtful guide.

  2. The article’s mention of carefully selecting one safe mushroom resonated with my own cautious approach to foraging. It’s clear the forest offers more than just beauty — there’s a quiet wisdom in knowing what to take. The chestnuts scattered along the trail felt like nature’s own gift, if you’re willing to look closely.
