Perched atop the majestic Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Christ the Redeemer statue ranks as one of the world’s most iconic monumental sculptures. Designed to honor the centennial celebration of Brazil’s independence in 1922, this awe-inspiring masterpiece took five years to design and construct before being unveiled on October 12, 1931.
Standing at an impressive 30 meters tall and weighing a staggering 1,145 tons, the statue’s outstretched arms span 28 meters, creating a powerful image visible from nearly every corner of the city. Nestled on the 700-meter-high peak of Tijuca National Park—also known affectionately as Corcovado or Jesus Mountain—the statue commands a total height of approximately 38 meters, including its pedestal.
As Rio’s quintessential “postcard,” the Christ the Redeemer statue, with its welcoming embrace, transcends religious symbolism to represent Brazil’s open-hearted invitation to travelers from across the globe.
