Because of the requirement for an appointment to get the yellow fever vaccine in my home country, and its limited validity of only 10 years, I decided to take care of it during my trip to South America as I was leaving in a rush. Surprisingly, I managed to smoothly secure the lifelong immunity yellow fever vaccine right at Bogota airport. Here’s how I did it:
I. The Specific Route and Steps
Start by heading to the second floor of Terminal 1. Walk straight from Gate 1 toward Gate 5. Once you reach Gate 5, turn right. You’ll spot a door with gray-blue lettering (refer to Picture 1). Enter through this door, and you’ll find another one just ahead (see Picture 2).
Step inside, and you’ll see a seating area with a circle of sofas where people wait to be called. Head directly to the room shown in Picture 3, where two friendly women handle the registration process. One of them will guide you outside to a wall displaying posters in both English and Spanish (see Picture 4) and ask some straightforward questions about the yellow fever vaccine while informing you of its precautions and requirements.
Hand over your passport, then settle onto the sofa until your name is called. Once your number is announced, re-enter the room, where they’ll inquire if you have any contraindications to the vaccine. If you answer no, you’ll begin filling out the vaccination card (see Picture 5). After completing the form, proceed into the inner room for the injection itself, which takes mere seconds—just one quick prick.
Finally, you’ll receive your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for yellow fever (see Pictures 6 and 7).
Following the procedure, you’ll be informed that this is a single-dose vaccine offering lifelong protection against yellow fever. The only precaution is simple: you can bathe, eat, exercise, and resume all normal activities without restriction, but avoid scratching or massaging the injection site.
