Living in Mexico, I embarked on a trip to Colombia. After spending three magical days in Medellin, I arrived at this off-the-beaten-path town. Everyone’s familiar with prices back in Mexico; but stepping into Colombia made me feel like I’d hit the jackpot—suddenly wealthier and more confident! Take a look at those skewers in the first picture: big chunks of juicy pork paired with one or two potatoes—all for just 6000 pesos, roughly 10.

5 RMB. Even by Mexican standards, that’s an incredible deal! Then there’s the set meal from a quaint little restaurant in the third picture. For only 20,000 pesos (about 34.5 RMB, or equivalent to 100 Mexican pesos), it was a feast fit for royalty. Back in Mexico, 100 pesos wouldn’t stretch far, and let’s not forget—there’s no tipping culture in Colombia either!

And speaking of food, these barbecue stalls have convinced me that Colombia truly outshines Mexico when it comes to culinary delights. Absolutely thumbs up for that! Right now, I’m in Apartadó, a place so remote that foreigners are practically nonexistent. The locals tell me there’s just one Chinese restaurant here, and so far, I’ve only spotted its owner.

Aside from that, I haven’t come across any other Asian faces. It’s quite the journey to get here—it took me a grueling seven-hour bus ride from Medellin. But hey, sometimes the best discoveries are worth the extra effort!
