Iquitos, a unique gateway to the Peruvian Amazon, is a town that can only be reached by air or by navigating the majestic Amazon River. This remote location adds an extra layer of adventure and mystery to any journey.
Over a century ago, Iquitos was the heart of the booming rubber industry. Today, it has transformed into a bustling hub for tourism, with hundreds of travel agencies ready to help you explore the wonders of the Amazon rainforest. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, the city offers a variety of convenient and exciting tour options.
**Touring Methods:**
1. **Lodge Tours:** Stay at a lodge in the heart of the rainforest and explore with experienced local guides.
2. **River Cruises:** Embark on a scenic cruise along the Amazon River.
3. **City-Based Day Tours:** Stay in the city and join day trips to nearby attractions.
For a balance of budget and immersive experience, many travelers, including myself, opt for lodge tours. These tours typically last 3 days and 2 nights or 4 days and 3 nights, providing ample time to delve into the natural beauty and rich biodiversity of the region.
With hundreds of lodges to choose from, I consulted several travel agencies and ultimately selected the most affordable option. While the facilities were modest, the tour activities were truly exceptional and unforgettable.
**💰 Price:**
The initial quote was 200 soles per day, totaling 600 soles for a 3-day trip, with room for negotiation. In the end, I managed to secure the entire experience for less than 1000 RMB. This all-inclusive price covered transportation, accommodation, guided tours, and meals.
**🚗 🚣 Transportation:**
On the first day, we embarked on a 2-hour drive from Iquitos to Nauta, followed by a 3-hour boat ride to the lodge. The return journey on the last day followed the same route, allowing us to take in the stunning landscapes one more time.
**🌳 Tour Activities:**
1. **River Cruise:** Board a traditional wooden boat and witness breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. Spot pink dolphins, monkeys, and a myriad of bird species along the way.
2. **Fishing:** Try your hand at catching piranhas and other fish, which will later be prepared as a delicious lunch.
3. **Jungle Trekking:** Experience both night and day treks, discovering the unique flora and fauna of the rainforest.
4. **Visit a Rainforest Village:** Explore a small village with around 100 households, complete with a quaint supermarket and the opportunity to interact with sloths.
**🏡 Lodge Accommodation and Meals:**
The lodge offers a hostel-style stay with no air conditioning, but fully equipped with mosquito nets and cold showers. The food, while simple, is hearty and satisfying, perfect after a day of adventure.
