🌳City Selection: When planning a trip to the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, you have two main gateway cities to choose from: Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado. Iquitos, located in northeastern Peru, is more developed and even featured in a popular Korean variety show. However, if you plan to visit Cusco afterward, you’ll need to transit through Lima. On the other hand, Puerto Maldonado, situated in southern Peru, is closer to Cusco, making it a time-saver for your itinerary. The downside is that the facilities and activities here are more rustic. We opted for Puerto Maldonado for its convenience and unique charm.
☎️Travel Agency Selection: It’s highly recommended to book your trip in advance. A three-day, two-night all-inclusive package typically covers airport transfers, meals, accommodation, and a range of activities. In Iquitos, “Ceiba Tops Lodge” is one of the top choices, known for its luxurious amenities and as the filming location of the variety show. It comes with a higher price tag, around $765 per person. In Puerto Maldonado, options are fewer, but we found “Green Diamond” to be an excellent value at $300 per person. If you need more details, feel free to ask for their contact information.
[2. Pre-trip Preparation]
💉Yellow Fever Vaccine: While not mandatory, getting vaccinated against yellow fever is strongly advised. Due to a national shortage this year, it’s best to make an appointment as soon as possible. I had to travel from Shanghai to Ningbo to get my shot, so plan ahead. Ideally, you should get vaccinated at least 10 days before entering the rainforest.
🦟Mosquito Prevention: Full-body anti-mosquito clothing (Figure 11) is incredibly effective. Additionally, bring along a good mosquito repellent spray for extra protection.
💊Medications: Pack Levofloxacin for dysentery, Diarrhea Powder and Enteritis Relief for gastrointestinal issues, Ibuprofen for fever and pain relief, and Vitamin C to boost your immune system.
[3. Transportation]
✈️Lima to Puerto Maldonado: A short 1.5-hour flight.
🚗Airport to Dock: A 30-minute drive.
🚣Dock to Accommodation: A scenic 30-minute boat ride.
✈️Puerto Maldonado to Cusco: A 50-minute flight, with only one daily departure, so book early to secure your spot!
[4. Activity Schedule]
1️⃣Day 1: Morning Arrival
* 13:00: Enjoy a hearty lunch.
* 14:00: Visit an indigenous village (Figure 4) to learn about local culture.
* 15:00: Try your hand at piranha fishing (Figures 5-7).
* 18:45: Embark on a night cruise on the Amazon River to spot crocodiles (Figure 8).
* 20:00: Savor a delicious dinner.
2️⃣Day 2:
* 9:00: Experience a canopy walk in the jungle (Figure 9).
* Alternatively, visit a wildlife rescue center or Monkey Island to see playful monkeys.
* 13:00: Lunch break.
* 14:00: Go on a rainforest trek to observe the rich wildlife (Figure 10).
* 15:00: Take a relaxing boat ride on the lake to see more animals (Figures 11-14).
* 18:45: Join a one-hour night jungle exploration (Figure 15).
* 20:00: Dinner under the stars.
3️⃣Day 3:
* 04:30: Witness the fascinating sight of parrots eating soil for 2 hours (Figures 16-17).
* 08:00: Breakfast (Figure 18).
* 09:00: Check out and bid farewell to the Amazon.
[5. Facilities]
🛖Accommodation: Stay in charming individual wooden cabins, which are surprisingly free of mosquitoes. Each cabin features hammocks and chairs on the porch, perfect for relaxation (Figures 2-3).
🛁Water Supply: Only cold water is available.
🛜Power & Internet: There is no mobile signal, but power and Wi-Fi are provided during specific times: 8-9 AM, 1-2 PM, and 8-10 PM daily.
