Machu Picchu is undeniably beautiful, but in my opinion, it doesn’t quite live up to its status as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It’s only marginally more impressive than the Chichen Itza pyramid in Mexico, which I found rather unexciting. Therefore, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the history of Machu Picchu before your visit to fully appreciate its significance.
Historical Background:
Built in the 15th century, Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic sites of the Inca Empire. It remained hidden from Spanish conquerors in the 16th century until it was rediscovered in 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham. Archaeologists believe it may have served as a summer retreat for the Inca emperor Pachacuti, making it a fascinating glimpse into the past.
