Explore 17 Peruvian Cities: Ultimate Guide to Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu & More 🇵🇪📷

I should be the person who has visited the most cities in Peru on Little Red Book [laughing emoji]! In my five years in Peru, I’ve explored seventeen incredible cities. Here’s a snapshot of what each one has to offer.

📍Lima: The vibrant capital, perched on cliffs by the sea, is a rainless wonder. You can catch waves surfing, soar through the skies paragliding, dance the night away in clubs, and immerse yourself in history at museums. Near the Plaza de Armas in the city center, colonial-era buildings transport you back in time. Lima is also a culinary paradise, boasting two restaurants in the top ten of the Michelin Guide, and many bars that rank among the world’s top fifty (I’ll share a detailed guide for Lima later).

📍Arequipa: Known as the White City, Arequipa sits close to a volcano 🌋, with its high altitude and dry climate. I’ve been there twice, and it’s hands down the best city in Peru for photography. The main area, built from white volcanic rock, is a photographer’s dream. Must-see spots include the stunning red and blue monastery. You can also go volcano biking, explore the breathtaking Colca Canyon, and marvel at the frozen Inca mummies.

📍Cusco: The heart of the Inca Empire, Cusco is surrounded by countless ancient sites. Visit the Sacred Valley, salt mines, and Inca temples. It’s an essential stop on your way to Machu Picchu, the iconic lost city of the Incas.

📍Aguas Calientes · Machu Picchu: From Cusco, take the scenic train to Aguas Calientes, or challenge yourself with a three-day hike along the Inca Trail to reach Machu Picchu. This ancient city, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, stands alongside the Great Wall as a testament to human ingenuity.

📍Chiclayo: A charming city north of Lima, Chiclayo was my home during my first year when I was sent to a school here. Life was incredibly comfortable, and every afternoon, I could stroll to the seaside. The city’s symbol is a unique type of fishing boat, which adds to its coastal charm.

📍Trujillo: As the third largest city in Peru, Trujillo is a must-visit for history and archaeology enthusiasts. Explore the Temple of the Sun and Moon and the ruins of Chan Chan, left by the Chimú and Moche civilizations before the Incas. Trujillo is also the birthplace of the graceful Peruvian dance, Marinera.

📍Piura & Mancora: Located in the northern part of Peru, close to Ecuador, Piura and Mancora boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Dive into the crystal-clear waters, or go whale and dolphin watching at sea. Piura is also home to a Confucius Institute, where you can spot sika deer and other wildlife on campus.

📍Paracas: Just a 3-4 hour drive from Lima, Paracas offers stunning natural scenery. Take a boat to see the bird island, home to over 150 species of birds, and visit the national park where the sea meets the desert, creating a picturesque landscape.

📍Ica: An oasis in the desert, Ica is perfect for thrilling activities like dune buggies and sandboarding. Watching the sunset and sunrise in the desert is a magical experience (photo 15). Don’t forget to bring a telephoto lens for those perfect shots 📷.

📍Huaraz: Known as the roof of Peru, Huaraz is the highest and most beautiful place in the country. Surrounded by glaciers 🧊, lakes, and majestic mountains 🏔️, it offers some of the most breathtaking hiking trails I’ve ever seen. Among the more than twenty countries I’ve visited, Huaraz stands out for its natural beauty.

📍Puno · Lake Titicaca: The highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca borders Bolivia. The locals live on islands made of reeds, preserving their traditional lifestyles. It’s a truly unique and enchanting place.

📍Chachapoyas: Known as the gateway to the Amazon, Chachapoyas offers a plethora of hiking trails that weave through a landscape rich with the fusion of Andean and Amazonian cultures. Perched majestically on a mountain top, the ancient city of Kuelap stands as a testament to a civilization that thrived nearly a thousand years before Machu Picchu, earning it the title of the “Machu Picchu of the North.”
