Peru 🇵🇪 is the 85th country on my round-the-world journey, and it’s a place that captured my heart from the very first moment. As soon as the plane touched down in Cusco and I caught sight of the breathtaking sunset, I knew it would be my favorite South American destination. Here, you’ll find the Andean civilization, one of the six great ancient civilizations, and Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world. There’s also the “Orient Express,” one of the world’s most beautiful railways, and the enchanting, mystical Amazon rainforest.
✅ About visas
Holders of Chinese 🇨🇳 passports with valid US, Schengen, or UK visas can enter Peru without a visa. Alternatively, you can apply for a sticker visa in advance in China.
✅ Peru 🇵🇪 itinerary
✳️ The ideal travel duration is 12 days.
✳️ Route: 2 days in Lima → 1 day in Ica (Ica) → 3 days in Cusco → 2 days in Machu Picchu → 2 days in Arequipa → 2 days in Puno. If time allows, you can also visit Iquitos to explore the Amazon rainforest.
1️⃣ Lima, the capital of Peru
My top recommendation is the Larco Museum, which houses an incredible collection of artifacts from various periods of Andean civilization, especially those from the Inca Empire. Other must-see places include the Plaza de Armas, Plaza San Martin, Chinatown in Lima (the largest in South America), and the Government Palace.
2️⃣ Ica
The highlight here is the Huacachina desert oasis, where you can experience thrilling dune bashing and sandboarding adventures.
3️⃣ Cusco
This is my favorite city in Peru and was once the cultural heart of the country. Key attractions include the Plaza de Armas, the Sacsayhuamán Inca ruins, the vibrant San Pedro Market, and the Convent of Santo Domingo (where the Inca emperor is buried). You can also take a day trip to the stunning Rainbow Mountain.
4️⃣ Machu Picchu
It’s the most iconic attraction in Peru, and the reason I came here! Take the scenic Inca Rail from Cusco through the Andes to Aguas Calientes. It’s highly recommended to buy tickets and Machu Picchu entrance tickets two weeks in advance on the official website, as they sell out quickly during peak season!
5️⃣ Arequipa
The second-largest city in Peru, its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it boasts two majestic volcanoes, Chachani and Misti, which offer challenging but rewarding hikes to their summits.
6️⃣ Puno
This was my final stop on my first trip to Peru. Here, you’ll find Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Don’t miss the Uros floating islands and the charming Taquile Island.
✅ Peru travel tips
1️⃣ On your first day in Cusco, avoid washing your hair or taking a shower, and refrain from strenuous activities to help acclimatize and prevent altitude sickness.
2️⃣ Food recommendations
Ceviche, the national dish of Peru, is a delightful blend of fresh, raw fish marinated in citrus juices. Cuy, a local delicacy, is roasted guinea pig, and don’t forget to try the flavorful llama meat.
3️⃣ Rainbow Mountain is at a very high altitude (5000 meters), so it’s advisable to ride a horse up and down to conserve energy.
4️⃣ When visiting Machu Picchu and the Amazon rainforest, remember to bring mosquito repellent to keep the bugs at bay!
