One of the most exhilarating adventures in South America is undoubtedly a trip to the Amazon rainforest in Peru, a must-see destination that you can finally tick off your bucket list 🌴
After meticulously researching various lodges online, with prices ranging from $300 to $1000 per person, I finally settled on a lodge and chose Larry as our guide. His glowing reviews on Xiaohongshu caught my attention, and further investigation revealed that he had a background as a resort guide before starting his own business. Larry’s passion for Chinese culture and his efforts to learn the language made him an even more appealing choice. The lodge, recently constructed, offers decent meals with a different menu each day, though the ingredients are somewhat limited. It was like unwrapping a delightful surprise, and I spent two nights and three days filled with wonder and joy. Initially, I was a bit anxious, but the experience proved to be both safe and reassuring.
Main experiences in the tropical rainforest:
1️⃣ Chasing pink dolphins on the Amazon River
As the sun sets over the Amazon, we embarked on a thrilling chase for the playful pink dolphins. These enchanting creatures, originally from the ocean, have adapted to the river environment and now thrive in smaller sizes. The sunset over the Amazon is a breathtaking spectacle, a sight that will stay with you forever.
2️⃣ Exploring the tropical rainforest to find various animals
Each day, Larry led us to different parts of the forest to spot a variety of wildlife. The animals here live freely, not in captivity, so it often takes patience and a keen eye to catch a glimpse of them. Larry’s sharp vision allowed him to spot many hidden treasures, while we relied on binoculars to follow his lead. We encountered sloths, parrots, crocodiles, frogs, giant trees, and snakes. Wearing high boots added a sense of security as we ventured through the dense undergrowth.
3️⃣ Fishing for piranhas
One of the most exciting activities was fishing for the infamous piranhas. With their razor-sharp teeth, these fish are surprisingly easy to catch in the Amazon River. Larry provided the fishing gear, and after a successful catch, he would explain the type of fish, whether it was edible, and if it posed any danger. Our freshly caught piranhas even became part of a delicious dinner.
4️⃣ Stargazing at night and exploring the tropical rainforest
Nighttime in the rainforest brings out a whole new world of activity. I participated in two nighttime excursions. The first night, we followed a well-trodden path, which was relatively calm. The second night, only I, Larry, and another guide ventured into the darkness to search for crocodiles. The thrill of walking on narrow paths, knowing that crocodiles could appear at any moment, was both terrifying and exhilarating. The starlit sky above added a magical touch to the adventure.
5️⃣ Sunrise moment
To witness the sunrise, we had to rise early, setting out when the stars were still twinkling in the sky. However, the early-to-bed, early-to-rise lifestyle of the locals made this early start feel less daunting. Watching the sun ascend over the tranquil Amazon River was a serene and beautiful experience, a perfect way to start the day.
Meals are served at fixed times, and there’s no internet or cell signal to be found. Electricity is a luxury, available only from 6-9 PM, leaving the rest of the day in natural darkness. July here is considered winter, with temperatures that are pleasantly mild. The nights can get surprisingly chilly, while the days warm up beautifully under the sun. This digital detox offers a rare opportunity for reflection and a leisurely pace.
