In response to a comment on my previous post about traveling to Peru at the end of the year, I decided to put together an itinerary for everyone’s reference. Even though I’m more of a spontaneous traveler, I always create a detailed Excel table for each trip to avoid any unnecessary queues, especially when I have two kids in tow.
Before we set off, I meticulously planned our schedule, but as with all adventures, there were a few adjustments along the way. For instance, we initially planned to rent a car for a day trip to Rainbow Mountain. However, after consulting with my husband, who wasn’t keen on the idea, and considering the potential challenges of high altitude for the kids, we opted for a leisurely day in Cusco instead. We discovered a charming rooftop with a breathtaking view, where we spent a delightful afternoon basking in the sun (Picture 1).
Overall, the trip was wonderfully relaxed, filled with delicious meals and refreshing drinks. Peruvian cuisine is truly a delight, perfectly suited to my Chinese palate. I highly recommend KUSYKAY for an unforgettable dining experience. However, one night in the Sacred Valley, my husband and I experienced a minor setback with a bout of food poisoning. Fortunately, it wasn’t too severe, and we were back on our feet after a half-day of rest [laughing and crying]. I was eager to try the Hiram Bingham Orient Express, so we spent our first night in Cusco. If you’re not interested in this luxurious train ride, you can easily hire a car from Cusco airport directly to the Sacred Valley, which has a lower altitude and is easier to acclimate to. On our arrival day, we felt a bit of altitude sickness and were quite fatigued, so we skipped dinner and headed straight to bed. The Sacred Valley holds a special place in my heart; I stayed for three days during my last visit, and this time, we enjoyed two nights. The resort-style hotels made it easy to spend a lazy afternoon by the pool with the kids, creating some wonderful memories.
For those planning a trip, I strongly recommend getting a Charles Schwab debit card. It offers free ATM withdrawals, which I’ve found incredibly convenient over the years. I always withdraw cash as soon as I arrive, making it much easier to manage expenses throughout the trip.
