South America was our destination during the Christmas season, and I’m excited to share this travel guide with you now [Facepalm R]. The trip was an incredible experience, offering a fantastic value for money. For all the details, read on!
[Sun R] Season: Traveling to South America during the Northern Hemisphere’s winter is absolutely delightful, with pleasant temperatures, especially in the highland regions. The climate is mild and comfortable; however, if it gets colder, it might not be as ideal. Since it’s peak tourist season, there are more visitors, but it never feels overcrowded, so no need to worry. It’s worth noting that some popular attractions, such as tours in Torres del Paine, glaciers, and Machu Picchu, require advance booking.
[Check-in R] Safety: Among South American countries, Chile and Peru stand out for their relatively high safety ratings. However, in the capital city of Santiago, it’s wise to be extra cautious with your belongings and avoid going out at night. Tourist areas like Puerto Natales, San Pedro de Atacama, and Cusco are generally safe, so you can enjoy your visit without too much concern.
[Airplane R] Travel: Most of our journey was by air, with the exception of the scenic train ride from Cusco to Machu Picchu. We had layovers in Santiago, primarily flying with LATAM. On our return from Puerto Natales to Santiago, we took a budget airline, Sky Airline, which was surprisingly comfortable. During our layover in Bogotá, we spent six hours at the El Dorado airport lounge, which offered self-service amenities and recliners. I highly recommend it for a comfortable stopover.
Notes: If your U.S. visa has more than six months of validity, you won’t need a visa for Chile and Peru. However, we encountered an issue with Delta, and for more details, you can check @Lorraine Luo’s notes. I won’t go into detail here, but it’s worth checking if Delta has updated its policies recently.
[List R] Itinerary: Our South American adventure was divided into three main parts. In the following posts, I’ll dive into our experiences in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, the Atacama Desert, and Cusco and Machu Picchu in Peru. We decided against visiting Easter Island due to the high cost of flights. Another option in Peru is the rainforest, but we skipped it this time as the season wasn’t the most suitable. If you’re planning a trip, these two destinations could be great additions to your itinerary.
